Dividend payouts of equity mutual funds are subject to 11.648% as Dividend Distribution Tax (DDT). However, dividends received is tax free in the hands of the investor. Additionally, there is a 0.001% Securities Transaction Tax (STT) on redemption of Equity Mutual Funds irrespective of the holding period. Dividend payouts of non-equity mutual funds are subject to 29.12% Dividend Distribution Tax (DDT). However, dividend received is tax free in the hands of the investor.

Equity Market Review

Despite fall in crude oil prices and strong currency, equity markets in India ended flat as global risk off worried investors. Nifty and Sensex ended the month of December with -0.1% and -0.3%,respectively. Broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices with BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gaining between 2-3%. Global markets were weak as worries over growth emerged on back of increasing trade war tension and as crude oil continued its downward journey.

Mutual funds add Rs 1.24 lakh crore to asset base in 2018

Mutual funds have added Rs 1.24 lakh crore to their asset base in 2018 assisted by consistent increase in SIP flows and a robust participation of retail investors despite volatile markets. The Asset Under Management (AUM) of the industry grew by 5.54% or Rs 1.24 lakh crore to Rs 23.61 lakh crore at the end of December 2018, from Rs 22.37 lakh crore at the end of December 2017, according to Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
