Indian stock market has seen upward momentum in the month of July, aided by easing crude, recovery in rupee, rate cut by GST council and the onset of a promising monsoon. Nifty and Sensex ended with (+6%) and (+6.2%) gains respectively and the Sensex touched the 37000 mark. The mutual fund industry has also been witnessing rise in AUM and as of June 2018 end it stood at Rs 23.57 lakh Crores ( source AMFI).

Rolling returns

Before investing in mutual funds investors generally consider CAGR as one of the parameters for fund selection. Compounded Annualized return or CAGR tracks the year on year growth of the investments over a specific period of time. To have a clear picture, let’s take an example. Suppose a fund was started in January 1, 2011, with an NAV of Rs 10. By December 31, 2016, its NAV had increased to Rs 20.

RBI chooses to play by the script

As broadly expected by us and majority of the market participants, the RBI MPC in a 5-1 vote decided to hike rates by 25bps, keeping the stance unchanged at neutral. The accompanying language has been kept deliberately balanced, highlighting two sided risks to future projections and actions, and hence the choice of a neutral stance allowing flexibility on either side to react to global and domestic developments.

Did You Know?

B30 assets accounts for 14% of the total industry AUM

Assets from B30 locations grew from Rs 3.23 lakh crore in May 2018 to Rs 3.32 lakh crore in June 2018. T30 assets meanwhile grew marginally from Rs 20.19 lakh crore to Rs 20.24 lakh crore, shows the latest AMFI data. Interestingly, majority of B30 assets (65%) were in equity schemes due to higher retail participation. Also, majority of T30 assets were in non-equity schemes (63%) because of institutional presence.
